Contemporary framed Atlas moth, with the worlds largest wingspan.

The enormous atlas moth (Atlas atticus). The Atlas moth, is a large moth of the saturniid family, endemic to the forests of Asia. The species was described by Carl Linnaeus in his 1758 10th edition of Systema Naturae. The Atlas moth is one of the largest lepidopterans, with a wingspan measuring up to 24 cm and a wing surface area of about 160 cm². The wing tips are said to resemble snake heads to deter predators. This species emerges as an adult moth without functioning mouth parts, and only survives as a moth for a week or so while it finds a mate.

Frame dimensions 23x23cm (9x9”). Wall hanging, glass removed for photos to avoid glare, all frames ship with glass.
