A striking mid-century artifact of classic British vanity glamour. A vintage gold-tone brass makeup compact, unbranded but possibly by the iconic manufacturer Stratton, featuring a genuine brown snakeskin leather panel inlaid into the lid.
Makeup compact with a circular mirror and an internal well, which still retains its original mesh powder sifter inside the well and printed typography insert. The insert contains instruction for the use of "Cream Powder" which was specifically engineered during the mid-20th century to accommodate standard pan refills like Max Factor's classic Crème Puff. The underside displays an engine-turned pinstripe design and a blank monogram shield (which could be engraved with initials).
Beautiful vintage condition. The hinges and catches are in fine working order and close tightly. The genuine snakeskin shows rich natural scaling with minimal age-related wear, and the internal mirror remains remarkably clear. It appears to be entirely unused. The only real sign of age is the yellowing to the glue around the edge of the mesh.
These pieces were hand sourced by me in September during a four day sourcing trip around northern Milan, and imported as a selected collection (aka the tiny amount of items I was able to fit into my hand luggage). I chose pieces based on what I love and would style in my own home. I began sourcing vintage professionally earlier this year, but I began collecting in my early 20’s. Living in an old house in the Norfolk countryside has led me to countless antique shops, vintage markets and museum gift shops (my secret for replica artefacts and the highest quality painting replicas of Old Masters).
