RARE Darwin's Hawk Moth (Xanthopan morganii)

£180.00
Sold Out

Extremely rare Madagascan hawk moth.

Rare Darwin’s hawkmoth (Xanthopan morgani). Very seldomly available to collectors. The giant hawkmoth, found only in Madagascar, was first seen in 1882, but Charles Darwin predicted its existence 20 years earlier while studying a rare Star-of-Bethlehem orchid in his London office. The orchid had a special foot-long nectar spur, and Darwin wondered what insect could reach it. He believed scientists would find an insect with a foot-long tongue that matched the orchid. Twenty years later, they discovered a related African hawkmoth, proving Darwin's idea of co-evolution, where two species influence each other's development.

Synonyms Macrosila morganii and Xanthopan morganii praedicta.

Wall hanging and free-standing, glass removed for photos to avoid glare, all frames ship with glass. Frame measures approx. 28×23cm.
